DIY music created from amazing things
Gaurav Sood | Oct 20 2009

Music is something inspired by nature itself, in-fact life itself is a melody which sometimes hits high notes and sometimes low notes. Music is all around you if you notice it carefully; walking down the road the chirping of birds, the sound of automobiles on a busy street even as I’m typing this on my keyboard there is a certain rhythm to it so it’s music for me. But, there are certain ways to create music from things you would have never imagined. So, here’s a rundown on sweet melodies created from not your usual music instruments, but sources you never would have thought of.

#1 Awesome music from a tree

Diego Stocco composed a breath taking melody by bowing twigs and shaking leaves on a tree as his instrument. The sounds used to make this piece of music were not modified in any way. The track was recorded using Pro Tool LE system.

#2 The vegetable orchestra

Who says that vegetables are just meant for eating, you can carve them into musical instruments and play some music, what’s more you can eat them after you’ve had a long hard day of music composition. Have a look at this video from the vegetable orchestra for some sweet melodies.

.

#3 Computer code melody

One of the most niche ones, this one shows your computer code can also generate music. Slub describes it as improvisation of music by writing computer programs in real time, basically its changing the music notes by describing the particular codes. Check out the complete video of the live computer code music below

#4 The sand harmonics

Have a look at this amazing music created from sand grains using piezo film transducers( taping them to the fingers) composed by Diego Stocco. The inspiration, well, the guy heard the sound coming from sand dropping from sandbags in his backyard.

.

#5 Windows XP & 98 Composition

Have a look at the following video in which the music is made completely out of Windows XP & 98 OS default sound with a bit of mixing using a software.

.

#6 ‘Ave Maria’ tune on a cutting saw

Have a look at this video which demonstrates how something like a saw can produce such life like music just like a violin would.

.

#7 Car crash symphony

This one was created by Eboman(a audiovisual composer) and named it sample madness using the sample sounds of car crashes.

.

#8 The Ketchup song

You might have seen this on TV, the ‘Heinz’ advertisement that uses stop motion VJ remixing to make a rhythmic melody from sounds of a ketchup bottle.

.

#9 Hitachi hard drive song

This composition comes courtesy of failing Hitachi hard drive sounds, which was compiled into a track. The sounds have not been tampered in any way.

.

#10 Mexican jumping bean music

Ambient music created by Mexican beans is something that no one could have ever though of , but Daniel Romero thought of it. This musical experiment uses a software and contact microphones which trigger tunes when the beans jump.

.

#11 The cardboard music

Video below shows how instruments made exclusively from cardboard can be the music for the ear.

.

#12 Music made from discarded objects

Chad VanGaalen created music from instruments made out of random objects(mostly of no use to us), which he picked up from trash cans.

.

#13 Music of the brain

Dan Lloyd (Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut) has come up with an ingenious way of turning the electrical impulses and flicking brain activity(recorded on a MRI scan) into music. This he achieved by assigning particular notes to the specific type of impulse activity which generated musical tones. This is truly impressive and we’ll have the demo video as soon as it is released for public viewing.

.

#14 Classic Protein music

Would you believe it, Rie Takahashi and Jeffery Miller(both from University of California), used parts of amino acid to devised 20 notes! Unfortunately we don’t have the video file of the Protein music, but will be uploaded as soon as we get it.
